Biblical Insight:
Jesus is the one credited with saying forgive 7 times 70 times (Matthew 18:21-22)! Forgiveness is a big deal in Jesus’s teaching. But notice how in Matthew 5:23-24 Jesus explains that if there is some wrong between 2 friends, they should physically go to each other and reconcile. Forgiveness is more than a mental process; it has a concrete component. This is why after Peter denies Jesus 3 times, Jesus asks Peter if Peter loved Him 3 times. Jesus forgave Peter and then gave him a chance to clean up his mess (John 21:14-17), and He ultimately restored Peter to his place of leadership. Asking for forgiveness doesn’t mean one has to undo all the wrongs they’ve done in the past; you’ve been forgiven. However taking actual responsibility to mend the relationship is an essential part of the forgiveness puzzle.
